Risk and the Value of Additional Insecticide Applications for European Corn Borer Control in Processing Sweet Corn
This analysis uses data from field evaluations of pyrethroid insecticides to estimate the uncertainty (risk) and expected value of additional insecticide applications and IPM to control European corn borer larvae in processing sweet corn. Preliminary empirical results indicate that IPM can increase expected returns around $5-$9/ac and reduce the risk (variability) of net returns.

Field studieswere conducted in 2003 and 2004 to determine the effects of grassyweeds, postemergence grass control, transgenic rootworm-resistant corn, Zea mays L., expressing the Cry3Bb1endotoxin andglyphosate herbicide tolerance (Bt corn), and the interactions of these factors on western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, damage and adult emergence. Three insect management ...
متن کاملCombined Impacts of Western Corn Rootworm Larval Feeding, European Corn Borer and Giant Foxtail on Field Corn
Corn rootworm (CRW) beetles exhibit a univoltine life cycle. Feral adults deposit their eggs into the soil of cornfields during July and August where they undergo diapause and overwinter. The following spring eggs hatch beginning in late May and continuing on into the middle part of June. Larvae of the new generation feed on developing corn roots. After reaching the third instar larvae pupate i...

Cornell University by seed industry legal restrictions placed on public scientists, limiting both laboratory and field research from the mid-1990s until 2010. Widespread and organized objections by corn entomologists from major agricultural universities in 2010, convinced the seed companies to loosen the legal restrictions limiting research by public scientists involving GMO crops. As a result,...
متن کاملSequential Sampling Plans for Use in Timing Insecticide Applications for Control of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Potato
J. Econ.Entomol.89(6): 1468-1476 (1996) ABSTRACT Sequential sampling plans were developed for use in recommending control of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hiibner), in potato, Solanum tuberosum L., fields based on the distribution of damaged stems. Likelihood ratio tests indicated that the betabinomial distribution (aggregated) provided a better fit than the binomial (random) when th...
